Specific requirements change based on the occupancy type. During an annual fire inspection, we will check exit doors & pathways, exit signage, emergency lighting, alarm panels, sprinkler systems, cooking suppression systems, fire extinguishers, electrical panels and more.

Recruit Academy

Interested candidates must apply through the department’s hiring process. Successful applicants who are offered a position will then be enrolled in the academy.

Yes. The academy enforces strict discipline, professionalism, teamwork, and respect. Violations of policy may result in corrective action or dismissal.

What happens if I fail a portion of the academy?2025-09-23T15:20:20-05:00

Recruits must pass both academic and physical requirements to graduate. Those who struggle will receive support and remediation when possible. However, failure to meet standards may result in dismissal from the academy.

Recruits are expected to study, prepare for exams, maintain physical fitness, and uphold professional conduct at all times.

Graduates will earn CPR, Emergency Medical Responder, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Driver/Operator – Pumper.

Firefighting is physically demanding. Recruits must meet baseline fitness standards and participate in daily physical training that includes strength, endurance, and agility exercises. Recruits will also complete timed skill tests in full gear.

Recruits receive instruction in areas such as department policies and procedures, culture, physical fitness, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, fire behavior and suppression techniques, technical rescue and vehicle extrication, and firefighter survival skills.

The Recruit Academy provides new firefighters with the knowledge, skills, and physical conditioning required to perform the duties of a firefighter safely and effectively. It covers classroom instruction, hands-on training, and emergency response preparation.

Yes. Many graduates go on to become firefighters. LPFPD4 has employed students from each high school training program class, and other students have been employed by other fire departments. The program gives students a head start in the fire service and may count toward future certifications.

No. LPFPD4 and LPPS issues students all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), uniforms, and training materials. Students are responsible for maintaining their gear in proper condition.

Classes are held during the school day for 2 hours each day. The program is the entire school year, consisting of 2 semesters.

Students will earn Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter I, & Firefighter II, which are all entry-level fire service credentials that can be used after graduation.

Yes. Students will participate in controlled live fire training under close supervision, but most training is classroom-based or done in a safe, simulated environment.

Yes. All activities are supervised by certified fire instructors. Students are issued proper safety gear and never placed in unsafe or uncontrolled situations.

The program is open to high school students who are seniors and/or juniors who are eligible to graduate early who meet academic and attendance requirements and have parental/guardian consent.

What is the High School Firefighter Program?2025-09-23T15:24:55-05:00

The program introduces students to the fire service through hands-on training, classroom instruction, and real-world experiences. It’s designed to build leadership, teamwork, and career skills. This is accomplished through a partnership with Livingston Parish Public Schools and LPFPD4.
